This Guide to the Archaeological Museum of Thessalonike is designed to meet a need long felt by visitors to it who wish to be well informed. The lack of any general guide to the Museum is due partly to the continual changes in the display of antiquities, resulting from the rapid increase over the last twenty years in the number of objects for exhibition. The catalogues-guides published in the past were either devoted to particular sections of the exhibition or included only a selection of the masterpieces housed in the Museum. The Guide to the Archaeological Museum of Thessalonike will, it is hoped, be of assistance to visitors who wish to form a general idea of the contents of the Archaeological Museum of Thessalonike, and a more detailed appreciation of the particular units within it, as they are guided by the book to the most important exhibits on display in each room, from showcase to showcase. The Introduction to ancient Macedonia, and the brief surveys prefixing each individual unit are designed to set the objects on display in the historical context in which they came into being. It is also our belief that the rich illustrative material will help to keep alive in the visitor’s mind the memory of the most impressive of the items in the Thessalonike Archaeological Museum.
